The bark is grayish brown and smooth. The leaves are a two-ranked even pinnate compound leaf, 30–50 centimeters long, with 20–40 leaflets, each leaflet bearing 10–20 small leaves. The leaf color is emerald green and the texture is light and feather-like. During the flowering period, the flowers are large, forming an umbel-like raceme. There are 5 petals, each 8–11 centimeters in diameter. Generally, 4 petals are bright red to orange-red, and the other one is upright and has yellowish-white spots. After flowering, it produces woody, flat, and strip-shaped pods. When mature, they are blackish brown, up to 60 centimeters long and 5 centimeters wide.
Royal Poinciana prefers a warm and sunny environment. The young plants are prone to frost damage, while the adult trees can tolerate temperatures around zero degrees Celsius for a short period, but prolonged exposure will cause the branches and leaves to wither and even die.
When planting, it is necessary to choose sandy loam soil with deep layers, good drainage, and good air permeability. During the seedling stage, the soil should be kept slightly moist to promote root growth, but after the tree becomes mature, water supply should be moderately controlled. During the rainy season, timely drainage is necessary to prevent waterlogging.
The branches of Royal Poinciana have the characteristic of extending growth. This process is carried out during the winter dormancy period or after flowering. The main pruning involves removing dead branches, diseased branches, overly dense branches, and drooping branches to maintain the ventilation and light penetration of the tree crown.
When planting, sufficient space for growth both above and below ground must be reserved, and it should be kept away from building foundations and underground pipelines.
